August 18, 2026Powerful QuestionsBy Robin Westerik
Asking questions is a fundamental part of human communication. We ask questions to learn, to understand, and to gain insight into the world around us. In coaching, asking questions is central to the coaching process. As a coach, the ability to craft thoughtful, probing questions can be the key to unlocking a client's full potential.
When we're stuck or struggling with a particular challenge, our minds often default to thinking about what's not working – what's going wrong, why things are so hard, and how we'll never get out of this rut. But coaching is all about shifting that focus away from the problem and towards finding solutions. With one powerful question, a coach can help a client see their situation in a new light, gain clarity on their goals and values, and develop strategies for overcoming obstacles.
So what makes a question “powerful”? It's not about being clever or witty! A powerful coaching question is one that encourages the client to think deeply, reflect critically, and explore new possibilities. It might be a simple open-ended question like “What do you hope to achieve in this situation?” or something more nuanced like “How does your current approach align with your values?”
The art of asking powerful questions lies in listening actively and attentively to the client's response. When someone is sharing their thoughts and feelings with us, it's easy to get caught up in our own reactions or opinions – but coaches need to stay present and focused on the client's experience. By doing so, coaches can help clients uncover new insights, gain confidence in their abilities, and develop the skills they need to succeed.
By incorporating powerful questioning into a coaching practice, coaches help clients achieve their goals – while building a stronger, more meaningful relationship with each of them. So next time you're working with someone who's stuck or struggling, remember that asking the right questions can be the key to unlocking their full potential. With patience, empathy, and a willingness to listen deeply, you'll be amazed at what your clients are capable of achieving – and how much they'll grow as a result of your coaching partnership.
